Scars: Emotional wounds or badges of resilience?

Writer: Trici Noel Trici Noel

The natural process of healing involves the development of scars in response to wounds or injuries. Similarly, when healing from the wounds of past traumas, relationships, or even misguided choices, it requires the right amount of time and appropriate care. To successfully heal, you need to surround yourself with supportive environments, circumstances, and people that can act as a healing balm or you need to adopt a positive attitude that can serve as a healing agent, similar to the effects of Neosporin.

Neosporin is an ointment that helps heal wounds and reduce scarring. The word "Neosporin" can be broken down into "neo-spore-in." "Neo" means new, and "spore" refers to a single-celled reproductive body that can grow into a new organism despite adverse conditions. This concept is reminiscent of Neo, the protagonist in the movie franchise "The Matrix." The matrix was a simulated environment where Neo had to create a new identity to escape it. He was faced wtih a choice of taking one of two pills. The pills represented a choice between remaining in a state of blissful ignorance experiencing an illusion (blue) or accepting and understanding what was actually occurring outside the illusion created by the matrix (red)

When you experience an injury, applying a band-aid or bandage may provide temporary protection, but it doesn't address the underlying wound. To achieve genuine and lasting healing, it's essential to administer a healing agent like Neosporin and allow sufficient time for recovery. Similarly, if you're still grappling with wounds from your past and struggling to progress in your healing journey, is it possible that you're in an environment or surrounded by situations that reopens the wound, preventing it from healing correctly? If so It's critical to recognize these situations and individuals that exacerbate your pain and seek out healthier environments that promote healing and growth.

When you find yourself in a nurturing and secure space, people and circumstances can act as a healing agent, much like Neosporin aids the healing process of a wound without the need for a bandage. Remember a bandage is only a temporary fix and is not a sustainable way to heal a wound, but so often we may use these 'bandages' to cover up trauma and mask it as being healed. Its crucial to protect and maintain nurturing environments to facilitate ongoing personal growth and transformation. In some cases, you may not have immediate control over your environment and must cultivate a "Neosporin" mindset until you can remove yourself from the situation. For example, a child growing up in an abusive and neglectful household or a battered woman who lacks the means or courage to leave an abusive partner.

The Neosporin attitude refers to a mindset and a collection of intentional habits, behaviors, and techniques that one develops and adopts, regardless of the surrounding environment or external circumstances. It involves being mindful of what we allow into our IN-vironment, including what beliefs we choose to internalize and how we speak to ourselves. Even if your environment is plagued with violence, poverty, recession, or war, you have the power to disconnect from that reality and cultivate more positive thoughts, feelings, habits, and behaviors that align with your desired reality. It's important to recognize and know that we have a choice to accept or reject any environment that doesn't align with the Divine Truth of God. The notion that 'you are a product of your environment' only holds true for those who fail to recognize the power that God instills in us to co-create our experience on this earth. I know such individuals who grew up in the most unhealthy and abusive environments, only to exceptionally rise above and become the complete opposite. They are nothing like their environments because of the preservation of their invironment.

What is your band aid from childhood traumas or past hurts and pain? Drugs, alcohol, sex, your career, social media, church, shopping, eating, emotional detachment, people pleasing, people bashing, pretending etc.?

Are you in environments or around people that fosters genuine and sustained healing, allowing you to undergo the healing process naturally and authentically? Or are you in an environment or around people that exacerbates the trauma, causing you to experience continuous emotional and mental distress, resulting in persistent wounds and scars?

Scars can hold immense emotional significance, representing either an emotional wound or a symbol of strength and resilience. In "The Lion King," Scar appears to bear a deep-seated emotional wound that he is unable to properly heal due to his unfavorable surroundings. The hyenas surrounding him are afraid of him and fail to provide him with the truth, ultimately exacerbating his ego.

Hyenas are often symbolic of power, intelligence, and survival, but in the movie they were portrayed as crude, unintelligent, and ferocious minions working under Scar's command. Their resentment towards the lions for being at the top of the food chain is evident, and they were willing to aid Scar in bringing down the lions to gain preying rights in the Pride Lands. Scar's intention was to steal Simba's destiny, which was bestowed upon him by God, and claim it as his own. The hyenas were instrumental in attempting to aid Scar to accomplish his nefarious plan, but ultimately, it led to all of their downfall; while Simba stepped into his true destiny, created in his birthright.

The environment and people we choose to surround ourselves with can significantly affect our personal growth and transformation. These factors can either serve as positive influences, aiding in progress, or become obstacles hindering our journey. Ultimately, they determine whether we emerge from our experiences stronger or weaker. Better or bitter.

As individuals, we possess the power to decide whether we allow our wounds to fester and morph into negative emotions such as bitterness, resentment, jealousy, and hatred, or work towards healing them to develop strength, forgiveness and resilience. By attaining the latter, we can rise above our current hardships, past traumas, and negative thought patterns that do not align with our faith and God's destiny for our lives. We can choose to either create a positive environment for ourselves or cultivate a "Neosporin spirit" that helps us transform despite the negativity in our surroundings. The choice is yours.
