Gardening: The new therapy...

Gardening is more than just a pastime; it is a remarkable activity that offers numerous health benefits. For starters, it serves as an excellent form of physical exercise. Digging, planting, weeding, and watering can help burn calories, improve cardiovascular health, and increase muscle strength and flexibility. For me, gardening offers a low-impact workout and is an accessible way for me to stay active.

This activity not only nurtures plants but also benefits our bodies by meeting our vitamin D needs naturally. Did you know that exposure to sunlight is essential for maintaining good health and well-being? Studies show, spending time outdoors, especially when gardening, allows us to bask in the beauty of nature and absorb vital vitamin D from the sun. Vitamin D is crucial for strong bones as it aids in calcium absorption. Optimal levels of vitamin D can also enhance the immune system, uplift mood, and lower the risk of illnesses, making it a perfect and natural swap from cow's milk, which over time can create mucus in the body.

Beyond the physical benefits, gardening has a significant positive impact on mental health. It can be a therapeutic and a stress-relieving activity, providing a sense of achievement and a connection to nature. The act of nurturing plants can be meditative and relaxing.

Feeling down? Studies have also shown that spending time in nature can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. The sense of accomplishment that comes from watching plants, fruits and vegetables grow and thrive can boost your mood and self-esteem. Gardening also encourages mindfulness and a connection to the natural world, which can be particularly grounding in an increasingly digital age.

To all the extroverts, gardening is not just a solitary hobby, but also a social activity that unites people. Whether it involves tending to a backyard garden with family, exchanging gardening advice with friends, or engaging in a community garden, it can foster strong connections and friendships. Working together in the garden opens doors for meaningful conversations, shared moments, and a sense of companionship. Being part of a gardening community provides a feeling of belonging and connection with like-minded individuals who share a passion for nurturing plants and the environment. These social bonds enrich the gardening journey and promote well-being by fostering a sense of community and unity. At the beginning of my gardening journey, three years ago, I consulted with members of the community garden I joined. They guided me on selecting the appropriate soil and recommended beginner-friendly vegetables to start with.

One of my favorite reasons for starting a garden, is because gardening can contribute to better nutrition. Growing your own fruits, vegetables, and herbs ensures access to fresh, organic produce, which can lead to healthier eating habits. Homegrown produce often has higher nutritional value than store-bought options because it can be harvested at peak ripeness. The process of growing your own food can increase awareness of what constitutes a healthy diet and inspire more nutritious meal planning and preparation.

Don't have a back yard or have limited space? Guess what? Gardening without a backyard is entirely possible and can be just as fulfilling. Urban gardening, balcony gardening, and even indoor gardening open up a world of possibilities for those with limited outdoor space. Container gardening allows you to grow a variety of plants, from herbs and vegetables to flowers and small shrubs, in pots and planters that can fit on a balcony, patio, or even a windowsill.

Vertical gardening is another innovative solution, using wall-mounted planters, hanging pots, or trellises to grow plants upwards rather than outwards. This method is particularly effective for small spaces and can create a lush, green wall that enhances the aesthetic of your home.

Indoor gardening enthusiasts often turn to hydroponics or aquaponics, which allow plants to grow without soil, using nutrient-rich water instead. These systems can be set up in a corner of a room, providing fresh produce year-round. No matter the size of your living space, with a bit of creativity and the right tools, you can cultivate a beautiful and productive garden.

Gardening is a holistic activity that nurtures the body, mind, and soul, making it a valuable addition to anyone's lifestyle. While some prefer therapists, which is an excellent way to stay on top of your mental health, consider gardening as another form of therapy.

Next time you step outside to tend to your garden, remember that you are not just cultivating plants but also cultivating your own health and well-being. It's a win win situation!
